The Department of Food and Nutrition is
designed to provide students with the necessary
training and preparation for careers in the
field of food and nutrition management.
It is obvious that one of the main reasons
for this is advances in the field of medicine
and health care.
However, we should not forget the contributions
made by those who work in the areas of food safety,
dietary health and nutrition management.
Even though an abundant and varied food supply gives us many
benefits, we must also be congnizant of the
accompanying increase in various adult diseases
among the population.
Until recently most people did not see the study
of food and nutrition as important as medical care.
These days, however, more and more institutions
such as schools and factories are using food and
nutrition specialists because of concerns about
food safety, members' health, and various other
nutrition-related concerns.
Also, recent changes in the law that give
nutritionists greater roles in health care management
have served to further elevate the social position
of those in the field.
The department programs are designed around the
guidelines set by the Ministry of Education and
Ministry of Health and Welfare. As such, it is one
of only two such departments in northern Japan.
The approach to studies in clinical nutrition,
theories of nutrition counseling, sitology and other
fields within the major give priority to the the
development of qualified specialists.
